What Are Wireless Earbuds?

Wireless Earbuds are headphones that can connect to any device. For example, they could connect to a smartphone, a surround sound system, Bluetooth-enabled bookshelf speakers, or even a home theater system.

They give you a hands-free experience and are a great source of listening to audio without the hassle of dealing with tangling or dangled wires. They are comfortable, affordable, lightweight, easy to use, and sound good.

Being wireless, they can be connected with any device and, depending on the features, maybe multiple devices at a time and can be used for a long period with a single charge. They can be easily worn during any activity without straining the head or neck muscles or causing any fatigue, but some special attention has to be given when wearing them while doing physical activities like running or working out.

Features To Look For When Buying Earbuds For Working Out

Waterproofing is a significant difference between a regular earbud and an earbud that could be used for a workout. This is because, while working out, it is natural to sweat, especially around your ears, and if wearing regular earbuds and listening to music and they are not water-resistant, you might get a shock or your earbuds may get damaged.

To avoid this, waterproof earbuds must always be preferred for working out. When buying the earbuds, it should be checked if the water-resistant rating is at least IPX4, stating that the earbuds are resistant to water from all sides.

If you are unaware of the IP or Ingress Protection rating, let me tell you that it denotes a product’s water or dust resistance level. Therefore, the standard rating which should be looked for is IPX4, wherein the X is a placeholder for the dust-resistant rating.

The products are denoted from IPX0 – IPX9 and any earbud with a rating anywhere between IPX1- IPX6 is considered water and dust resistant but cannot be submerged.

Any earbud with a rating of IPX7 denotes that this earbud will be able to keep itself waterproof in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. If you want better water protection, you can go for or above and be submerged in water for a limited time.

Earbuds falling off your ears now and then with the slightest jerk while working out can be very distracting. To avoid this, you must always check if the earbuds have the right ear-tip and control not to cause any distractions while working out. My personal favorite in this department would be Powerbeats Pro Wireless Earbuds. These are sweat-resistant and also have a mammoth 9 hours of listening time.

When selecting wireless earbuds for working out, going with an earbud with Fins or hooks is a better option. However, if you have already purchased wireless earbuds that do not have a fin or a hook, then you can go with a third-party ear-tip available of any preferred shape or size that can be bought to seal your ear to remain fixed.

Generally, open-fit earbuds use hooks that go to the back of the ear to remain fixed, and sealed earbuds use wing tips or fins that stick to your ears’ front muscles to stay fixed. Properly fixed earbuds help you control their functions, like pausing and playing the audio or giving voice commands and receiving calls without stressing about the earbuds falling off your ears.

Wireless earbuds used during workouts go through a lot of strain and pressure. They might fall several times, get stuffed in gym bags, and get constant exposure to sweat and moisture. Therefore, looking for a body with rugged construction is essential to save the earbuds from getting damaged or breaking.

In terms of durability, I also make sure that they are light in weight but made up of rigid and flexible material to use for a more extended period. My favorites in this department would be Jaybird Tarah Bluetooth Wireless Sport Headphones. These are also sweatproof and waterproof.

Workout Earbuds with week-long battery hours will be helpful as you can work out for longer hours and listen to your audio continuously without worrying much about charging the battery. However, many earbuds in the market offer 6-8 hours of battery life, i.e., a 50 mAh battery in each earbud is best suited for this category.

If you forget to charge the earbuds now and then, you can buy a portable charging case to help store and recharge your wireless earbuds. To be specific, I was amazed by the performance of Beats Powerbeats 4 Wireless. It easily gave me 12 hours of continuous listening time on a single charge.

Active noise cancelation aims to cancel out or block any external noise. While working out in a gym or outside, the chaos of any form, whether gym music or street noise, can be very distracting. However, I like the sounds in the gym as it makes me more focused on my daily routine, but if you are not one of them, then earbuds with an Active noise-canceling feature can prove to be the most helpful in such situations.

Even without these unwanted sounds, Active noise-canceling enabled earbuds can cancel out the minutest repetitive sounds like an air-conditioner allowing you to listen to your audio without increasing its volume while isolating the noise around you.

Active noise cancelation feature works simply by reading your environment through the microphone and creating a frequency equivalent to the noise level around you through a dedicated chipset inside the earbuds. In this category, I love the ANC provided by Apple’s AirPods Pro and Apple AirPods Pro 2.

A Hear-Through mode in an earbud is essential, especially with the active noise canceling feature. It helps you to hear the conversations around you with a single touch.

In this mode, the microphone generally picks up on the external sounds through the mic. It transmits them to the speakers instead of canceling those noises by creating similar frequency sound waves as in the Active noise canceling mode. The Hear-Through method is helpful as it helps you stay aware of your surroundings. This model is also known as the Transparency Mode because it makes the external world sound clear to the listener. Jabra Elite 75t is one of the best headphones in this category of hear-through wireless headphones.

Looking for the codec specification is generally one of the more ignored aspects during the selection process of the headphone. While choosing an earbud for working out, it is essential to know what codec the earbuds support. For example, an important pair will support only SBC (low-complexity sub-band) codec, whereas a pair of good wireless earphones support codecs like aptX, aptX HD, and LDC 900.

Codec determines how audio is transmitted over Bluetooth from the source to your wireless earphones by encoding and decoding digital audio signals for faster and more reliable wireless transmission.

Codecs like aptX have a lower latency and support a faster bitrate resulting in faster functioning than other codecs making it one of the better options in terms of sound quality. It is available in functions like HD, Low latency, and different adaptive variations.

On the other hand, Codecs like SBC are default codecs having higher enough latency to cause severe sound delays. If you go for Apple device earbuds, you might consider Apple’s proprietary AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec. It supports high resolution and delivers excellent audio playback with good audio quality.

I prefer my wireless earbuds to be lightweight, so they do not feel heavy on the ears and make it easy for me to wear them for as long as I want. They should have control pads or buttons to quickly access essential functions like volume increase, skipping a track, or receiving calls.

In the case of earbuds without such controls, the connected device might be required to perform these functions, which can be troublesome while working out. Nowadays, to make accessibility easier, some earbuds pause the audio automatically the moment you pull an earbud out of your ear.

Why Should Workout Earbuds Be Used In Place Of Regular Earbuds?

Workout Earbuds are designed to function in ways that regular earbuds might not be able to. For example, they have a rugged construction due to which they can fall or get crushed under the weight and still work, whereas the regular earbuds in the same case might break or get easily damaged.

Workout earbuds with an IP rating above IPX4 are meant to come in contact with water without fusing off. Meanwhile, regular earbuds might electrocute the user in such a case. Overall, they are easier to use and store and provide a much better experience than a  regular earbud.

Conclusion

To sum up, wireless earbuds are excellent accessories without having to deal with tangled cables. They provide a lot more freedom and flexibility. However, while working out, you should prefer using an earbud that is manufactured explicitly for workout conditions so that they do not create issues when you are working out. Wireless earbuds meant for working out should have a rugged construction, be waterproof, and have fins, hooks, or any other alternative to remain fixed on your ears.

They should also have features like active noise-canceling and Hear-Through mode to avoid distractions and also be able to know about your surroundings with good battery power as these features are capable of draining the battery faster than usual. I hope that this article was helpful enough to know why you should choose different earbuds for working out and what features the features should your workout earbuds must have to give you the best experience.
